Cross Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is a form of skiing that depends on their own movement to glide across the snow-covered regions. Many people enjoy this sport and partake in the competitions.

Although the sport has only evolved over the past 150 years, the history of cross-country skiing is amazing! It all began in Scandinavia over 5,000 years ago. It was 1890 when Canada was made aware of the sport. Today, practically 4 million Canadians are enjoying this sport. Cross-country skiing has rapidly become a trend in Canada. Canadians engage skiing championships. The 91st Canadian Ski Nationals are coming to the Lappe Nordic Centre, Thunder Bay from March 10 to 17, 2018.

Cross-country skiing is an outdoor sport I have thought about participating in since I was young. I recently moved back to Michigan from California. Although I am not keen on getting cold, I am willing to bundle up and try some snow sports. I live in the great woodlands near a little lake. Wildlife roams these forests leaving trails of adventurous evidence to explore. I can imagine gliding along the snow-packed trails and studying various animal tracks. For myself, this would make the sport even more interesting. Although, I have read maneuvering the skiis on off-trails can be difficult because skiis are long. Typically, cross-country skiis are long and thin. The length of the skies has always intimidated me because I am a short woman. This is one reason I have not tried this sport.

Variants of cross-country skiing are adapted according to the terrain. One form of cross-country skiing is recreational skiing. Recreational skiing is where you would typically ski at a groomed trail. This form of skiing can include ski touring and/or groomed trail skiing. Ski touring generally occurs outside of ski resorts and off-piste. The ability to stay at a walking pace with this form of skiing seems luxurious and peaceful. Whereas, Alpine skiing does not seem quite the same. Groomed trail skiing, on the other hand, occurs at facilities. Trails there are groomed for both classic and skate-skiing. These facilities may organize a standard meeting design for well known International and Domestic organizations.

Are there competitions in cross-country skiing? Yes, there is a variety of competitions that encompass the sport. These types of competitions will be covered throughout my blog posts in the future as we follow some of the competitions.

Cross-country skiing is a style of winter skiing that has developed through the years into a sport many countries enjoy and compete in. There are several types of skiing.
